Slate: “Todd Akin and Richard Mourdock aren’t outliers. Banning abortion for rape victims is the new Republican mainstream.”
Los Angeles Daily News: “After three straight years of dramatic declines, reported hate crimes rose in Los Angeles for the first time last year, although they remained well below the average for the past 20 years, according to a report issued Wednesday by the Los Angeles County Commission on Human Relations.”
Washington Post: “The man, who authorities say shot an unarmed security guard while trying to get inside the conservative Family Research Council in August, has been indicted on new charges, including committing an act of terrorism, according to D.C.’s U.S. attorney’s office. Prosecutors said the superceding grand jury indictment unsealed Wednesday against Floyd Lee Corkins II is the first time a suspect has been charged under the District’s Anti-Terrorism Act of 2002. Corkins could be sentenced to up to 30 years in prison on that charge alone.”
Huffington Post: “A man was stabbed Tuesday during a violent confrontation with an abortion protester outside [an Oregon] Planned Parenthood health center, police said. Ted Clair was stabbed seven times in the abdomen and neck during a fight with Christopher Tolhurst, who had signs denouncing abortion and Planned Parenthood, officials said.”
Washington Post: “Republican politicians quickly distanced themselves from [Indiana Senate candidate Richard] Mourdock. Pro-life advocates have had the opposite reaction: They have doubled down on their support for the candidate and the strong anti-abortion position he’s articulated.”
Comment: Chicago Sun-Times: “I’m not shocked by former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin’s racially offensive ‘shuck and jive‘ remark. Like political yakker Ann Coulter, who apparently thinks it’s a sign of her genius to call the president of the United States a ‘retard,’ Palin has become famous because of her irreverent comments, and these days irreverent often means racist.”
Comment: New York Daily News: “Racism is not a card. It’s a reality for many black and brown people in 2012. If you are not a person of color, it’s important you don’t find yourself quickly discounting the pervasive existence of racism in 2012, without actually speaking with a person of color. Assuming things are just better because we can drink at the same water fountain isn’t sufficient.”
