BBC News: The US Congress has passed a bill to normalise trade with Russia, but which will also penalise Russian officials linked to human rights violations. The legislation passed by large majorities in the House and Senate.” A man has pleaded guilty to plotting to attack a Seattle military office with machine guns and grenades. The U.S. attorney’s office says 35-year-old Abu Khalid Abdul-Latif entered his pleas Thursday and agreed to a prison sentence between 17 and 19 years. He pleaded guilty to conspiracy to murder U.S. officers and conspiracy to use weapons of mass destruction.”

Metro News: “The arrest of four gang members in connection to three homicides is a ‘significant take down of some very violent people,’ according to an Edmonton criminologist. ‘It’s a violent, gruesome group of people that were brought to task,’ said criminologist Bill Pitt, noting the murders increased in ‘brutality and bloodiness.’ Police announced on Tuesday that four men, linked to the White Boy Posse gang, were charged with first-degree murder in connection to three ‘shocking’ homicides.”

CBS: “Police arrested a suspected white supremacist Wednesday morning when an assortment of firearms and ammunition was discovered inside his Citrus Heights home.”

Seattle Times: “A Utah inmate covered in neo-Nazi tattoos was given a life sentence without the possibility of parole Wednesday for killing a prison guard during a doctor’s appointment five years ago, then leading police on a high-speed chase that ended at a fast-food restaurant, where a customer wrestled a gun from him.”

Hatewatch: A suspected “Sovereign Citizen” has been arrested after a nationwide manhunt. “Mitchell L. Walck, wanted for shooting at an Idaho state trooper last weekend and later kidnapping a North Idaho woman, hid in the sleeper cab of the parked truck in Bismarck and pointed a handgun at its driver when he returned to the rig. The truck driver ran from the rig and called 911, as did another eyewitness, telling responding officers that Walck had run from the truck stop to a nearby mobile home park, Bismarck Police Sgt. Mark Buschena told Hatewatch today.”

Comment: The Nation: “In October, I blogged about an incident in Afghanistan in which three small children were killed in a US airstrike. In that one small incident, which drew little attention at the time and since, three children aged 12, 10 and 8 were blown to smithereens in a NATO bombing while they were out gathering dung for fuel. Now, in a despicable article in Military Times, the US military says that children are legitimate targets in the war in Afghanistan because sometimes the Taliban and other insurgents use kids.”
